Former mayor Alfredo Ramos was arbitrarily detained by a squadron of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) in Barquisimeto on July 28, 2017, after a measure issued by the Supreme Court of Justice against him, accusing him of disregarding an order that it forced him to prevent barricades in his municipality. The officials presented themselves at the mayor’s office with hoods and long arms and struggled with local workers, who tried to prevent the kidnapping.
The sentence of the Constitutional Chamber sanctioned him with 15 months of prison, in addition to forcing him to cease his functions as mayor and politically disqualify him during the time the sentence lasted. Previously he was banned from leaving the country. During the hearing in which the measure was ruled, Ramos was not present.
While he was deprived of liberty, his wife Carmen Ramos denounced that the leader of La Causa R denounce that he suffered from hypertensive crises. In a visit she made to the leader, after 26 days of presidency, Carmen declared that she found him “pale and trembling”.
Alfredo Ramos was released on December 23, 2017 by a decision of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), after Delcy Rodríguez announced alternative measures to the detention of 80 political prisoners, including him. After being released, he had to attend a speech given by Rodríguez on behalf of the Truth Commission.
