Name: Carlos Contreras
Arbitrarily detained: May 20, 2017
Released: June 13, 2018
Place of confinement: Ramo Verde
Occupation: Student
Carlos was arrested in the context of the protests that took place in the country in 2017. A military court accused him without proof of belonging to a terrorist group that sought to destabilize the government of Nicolás Maduro. Since then, he has been unjustly detained for more than a year in the Ramo Verde military prison.
Like many other political prisoners, Carlos was subjected to torture. The electric shocks he received in the testicles caused a perianal abscess that could lead to prostate cancer.
Ylsys Contreras, mother of the 26-year-old young man, said that requests to the military justice for her son to receive medical attention were not heard. After almost a year of torture and being detained without treatment in the Ramo Verde dungeons, Carlos’ situation became more and more delicate.
“The doctor visually checks him, but he has not had a physical examination. He’s deteriorating “, denounced Ylsys. Finally, he was released by a measure of the National Constituent Assembly on June 13, 2018. He should never have been behind bars.
