Name: Jesús Alarcón Camacho
Arbitrarily detained: November 20, 2015
Place of confinement: Prison July 26
Occupation: Captain of the National Guard (GN)
Jesus was arrested by more than 20 officials of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (Dgcim) on November 20, 2015, when he attended a meeting of captains in the Theater of the Military Academy of Venezuela. The government linked him with the Phoenix Strike, an alleged armed movement of national guards that would seek to overthrow Nicolás Maduro.
Imprisoned initially in Ramo Verde prison, the court martial charged him with the crime of instigation of rebellion.
Captain Jesús Alarcón has demonstrated a critical position towards the regime of Nicolás Maduro, demonstrating his dissatisfaction with the presence of Cubans in the Armed Forces, the personality cult of Hugo Chávez and the imposition of Marxist doctrine in the barracks.
In a public letter made from his presidio, Jesus said: “Here, between the bars, I have found my true freedom (…) I don’t look down on anybody, I don’t kneel on any person”.
Today, he remains locked in the 26 de Julio prison. He’s innocent.
