Name: Juan Bautista Guevara
Arbitrarily detained: November 23, 2004
Place of confinement: El Helicoide
Occupation: Former CTPJ inspector
Juan is the father of six children, and he’s almost 14 years imprisoned by the Chavista regime. He was linked to the murder of prosecutor Danilo Anderson and sentenced, as were his cousins, Otoniel and Rolando Guevara.
The arrest warrant against Juan was issued by the then judge of the 34th Court of First Instance in Criminal Matters, Maikel Moreno. Disip officials detained him at his home on November 20, 2004.
With the testimony of a witness who later declared himself a mitomaniac and evidence of procedural fraud set by the Public Ministry (at the confession of a prosecutor), Juan Bautista was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The Anti-Terrorism Law was established for this case. Both Juan and his cousins were accused by nominal prosecutors and also convicted by nominal judges, using false witnesses known as “star witnesses.”
In 2011, the defense requested alternative sentencing measures. The request was not heard. Guevara is still held in the dungeons of El Helicoide, 13 years later.
