Maria Elena Uzcátegui was arbitrarily detained since September 12, 2014.
She was imprisoned in the Uribana prison and in 3 months she lowered more than 20 kilos, so on December 19, 2014, she was granted a humanitarian measure of house arrest.
María Elena is a housewife and grandmother. The days before her arrest, María Elena was helping some young people who were protesting peacefully against the government in Barquisimeto, Lara state. She was charged with the crimes of instigating hatred and public intimidation.
On June 1, 2018, a “pacifying” measure of the National Constituent Assembly granted her release under restrictive measures. Like all hostages benefiting by the release order, she was forced to appear before the Truth Commission.
