Roniel is a councilor of the Heres municipality of Bolívar state and a member of the Voluntad Popular party. On January 12, 2017, officials of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) raided his house and detained him, without any type of court order.
That same day, other party leaders in the entity, such as youth activist Irwin Roca, were also apprehended. The presentation hearing was deferred several times, until finally a court ordered imprisonment against him.
He was charged, without evidence, for the charges of complicity in looting, devastation, instigation and coercion. He was held for two months in the El Dorado prison, one of the most dangerous prisons in the country, where he shared space with ordinary prisoners.
On the night of March 13, 2017, deputies and spokespersons of Voluntad Popular announced his release. Currently, he’s under the filing regime every 15 days. He should never have been imprisoned.
