The professor Santiago Guevara was arbitrarily detained on February 23, 2017. He is a professor of economist at the Universidad de Carabobo (UC) and a researcher. He was imputed for rebellion and treason. On February 21, 2017, they searched his residence and took away, among other belongings, his personal computer where his third book on transitions to democracy was located. Subsequently, he received a summons to appear before the Military Prosecutor’s Office on February 23, 2017, and was detained since that date.

Professor Guevara suffers from hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome and has a tendency for his joints to harden easily due to stress. After six months arbitrarily detained and four times deferred the preliminary hearing Professor Guevara lost 22 kilos and his health was seriously compromised.

After almost a year behind bars, with an increasingly compromised health, the teacher was released on December 24, 2017, on Christmas Eve. He should never have been behind bars.
