Yoel Bellorín is a professor at the University of Oriente. On April 19, 2017, he was arrested while participating in an anti-government protest in the center of Maturín, Monagas state. As reported by the Foro Penal, functionaries of the government planted the teacher with “molotov cocktails, rubbers and even weapons of war”.
A court charged him with the charges of disturbing public order and possession of explosive and incendiary material. He was held for several months in the Municipal Police of Maturín, where his health deteriorated drastically.
He has been tortured. Foro Penal denounced that National Guard and Sebin chiefs subjected him to physical abuse and violence to force him to accuse opposition leaders of the violence in the protests that took place in the state.
On September 19, 2017, five months after his arrest, Professor Bellorín was granted house arrest. The lawyers had requested the measure for the health conditions of the teacher, who suffers from diabetes and hypertension.
