UN finds excessive use of force against demonstrators in Venezuela

The United Nations denounced on Tuesday “widespread and systematic use of excessive force and arbitrary detentions against demonstrators in Venezuela,” in addition to at least 5,000 arbitrary detentions, during which many people suffered torture.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) produced a preliminary report on the Venezuela’s case. Data collected include 135 witness attestations from Geneva and Panama, given the Venezuelan government denial to the requests from the UN agency to visit the country, Efe reported.

The analysis found a “clear pattern” of excessive use of force against demonstrators since the wave of protests began in April. Read more

Ecuador: Lenin Moreno Expresses Concern over Deaths and “Political Prisoners” in Venezuela

Despite recent declarations by Ecuador in which its officials have called for respect for the Constituent Assembly of Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro’s regime, and have rejected Trump’s statements about possible military intervention in Venezuela, President Lenin Moreno expressed his concern about the situation of the Andean neighbor country in crisis .

“The situation that our beloved sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is going through is known and worrisome,” the president said in his report to the nation, which is televised every Monday.

“Above all law, above any ideological or political position, life is sacred and untouchable, the death of human beings is a fact that we must regret and strongly reject,” he added. Read more

Violin-playing protester freed from jail in Venezuela

A Venezuelan violinist who is a well-known face of protests against his country’s socialist government has been freed after more than two weeks in prison.

The office of Venezuela’s chief prosecutor said Tuesday night that a court granted its request for Wuilly Arteaga to be let out on parole. He was detained last month during a protest and his lawyers have said he was beaten with his violin while during custody.

The 23-year-old musician skyrocketed to fame after he and his violin were dragged to the ground by national guardsmen during a confrontation with protesters.Read more

Venezuela Supreme Court Orders Arrest of Fourth Opposition Mayor

Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered for the arrest of David Smolansky, the Mayor of El Hatillo and a member of the Popular Will party, this Wednesday August 9.

“The constitutional chamber of the Supreme Court in a joint presentation of the judges and magistrates that comprise it, declared that David Smolansky is being held in contempt for his actions as mayor of the municipality of Hatillo in the Bolivarian state of Miranda,” a statement from the court read.

Smolansky was charged with 15 months in prison for failing to fulfill his duties as mayor of El Hatillo, as well as for “his absolute lack of conformity with the established rule of law.” Smolansky was also banned from leaving the country.Read more

Germany Strongly Condemns Brutal Maduro Regime in Venezuela

Germany spoke out against the Venezuelan dictatorship this Monday, August 14, condemning the violence and repression Nicolás Maduro’s regime has perpetrated in the country.

“Our demands are clear,” Press Secretary Steffen Seibert said. “The arbitrary arrests and excessive use of violence against opponents of the regime must be stopped, the Attorney General Ortega must be guaranteed protection and all political prisoners must be released.”

The spokesman also announced that Angela Merkel’s administration will adhere to the Lima Declaration signed by several countries in the region on August 8, in which 11 Latin American countries and Canada voted unanimously to declare the illegitimacy of Maduro’s Constituent Assembly. Read more
